Paige Bier_18 Sept._Student Choice I: Initation

Today in class, September 18th, we reviewed specific sites in Greece that are sacred where only those who were initiated are granted entrance through the gates. As an initiated woman of a Panhellenic sorority here on campus, I am granted entrance at chapter (group meetings) because I have been initiated. Initiation is a secret and sacred process that is not revealed with any member outside of my organization. Just as my own organization has its own ritual and/or practices, other sorority women—as well as fraternity men—have their own initiation process subject to their own organization. Initiation ties the members together into one organization, and is something that only the individual members inside that organization know or will come to know as initiates. This relates to the discussion in class about receiving permission to enter the gates through initiation because this means that those women or men went through a sacred process that binds them. These men and women, after their initiation, are now privileged to receive access to enter these gates in Greece.
