Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture II

“Essential to the Christian faith, of course, is the belief that God has intervened in the past, and implicit is the idea that he may intervene again” (Turner, 173).  This quote really stuck with me, because I have a lot of religious friends and it is not uncommon that they found their faith because of some drastic change in their life. My one friend suffered from depression and during that low time she was introduced to Christianity. She says that she used her faith to motivate her to get help and push on, and she knows her god works in mysterious ways. So if he could help her get out of that low point, he will help her if something like that ever happened again. It’s interesting that a religion is sometimes based on the idea that their god works in mysterious ways, and just because he has intervened in the past, he might possibly also intervene in the future. I can imagine that this would happen because the idea of having your god save you when you are going through something hard is comforting to someone who is struggling in the first place.
