Music and Religion

Lindsey Renoll
Blog Topic: How music is used to express faith
The other day I was sitting in my room with my roommate, who loves country music. Some song was playing and I noticed some of the lyrics, like “just a little faith, it will all get better” and "God, if you're there come and rescue me." I didn’t really think twice about this seemingly religious song until I realized my roommate considers herself an atheist so I asked her about the song. Apparently she never even realized it was a religious song until I mentioned it. It made me think, how many popular songs are there that are actually religious but people don’t notice? Or if they do notice they don’t seem to care that it is religious. It’s interesting how typically nonreligious people hate being preached to, however when it’s in a song they just think of it as a way of the artist expressing themselves. I know music has always been a common way to convey faith, but I never really paid attention to the fact that people aren’t as bothered by preaching when it’s through song.
