When I think of pilgrimage I think of someone moving from one place to another to change who they are or grow in faith and find their part in the world. It was interesting to read Turner’s book about pilgrimage, because although there were a few things I already knew and understood, there was a lot of stuff that I had never heard before and I was amazed to learn. Such as in Hinduism the pilgrims go to the shrines dedicated to where their founders were lost (Turner, 33), I couldn’t help but be reminded how a lot of Christians pilgrimage to Jerusalem because it played a significant role in the history of Christianity. It seems that most religions and pilgrimages are centered on a significant location to their founders. Such as the Camino, it ends where Saint James has a shrine dedicated to him. Overall, I can’t help but be intrigued by how people go on these pilgrimages sometimes just because they are going to a shrine of the founder, I would love to understand what would cause someone to walk what sometimes is hundreds of miles.
