Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture -1
I drive an old car with many, many miles on it, so when I was going to DC for a conference, I chose to take route 17 most of the way. Unfortunately, all my passengers almost immediately fell asleep. Despite their slumber, I actually had a really nice time. The quiet allowed me to encounter my like I never have before. Buber writes about encountering another being as a You, but I saw my interaction with my car as an extension of my consciousness. Perhaps this is what Buber meant? I know for certain that I was not imposing my own consciousness on the car, but during those 3 hours, it felt more like we were melded together in some ephemeral spiritual bond. Perhaps this feeling is closest to Turners’ idea of Flow; I experienced a merging of the action, movement and mechanics of the vehicle, and my awareness. It’s hard to explain with the English language how driving can sometimes be liminal, but it certainly had characteristics of Flow on that day.
