Outside reading-1

Victor Turner in The Ritual Process presents some interesting ideas about liminality in contrast with “status system.” The one that spoke most clearly to me was the idea of humility as a characteristic of liminality (106). Someone I know once articulated it very well saying, “be confident, but not proud.” I see this advice as one of the best I’ve ever had for opening up to people. In any community, inviting new members in requires confidence; I think people respond well to a certain level of positive energy. On the other hand, I’ve personally seen what happens with a person who is so confident that pride takes a hold and ostentation and ego become the norm. Not only is this off-putting, but I think that it prevents a person from encountering another.
