Post on Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture #1

Our text book, Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture describes a couple terms that we discussed at length during class.  "Liminality" and "Pilgrimage".  Liminality is described as a state and process of mid-transition in a rite of passage.  This can relate to communitas when we would have class discussions.  The idea of liminality was a little vague in the beginning but through reading this text and our class talks I realized it can go in many different directions.  "Much of what has been bound by social structure is liberated, notably the sense of comradeship and communion and communitas."  Throughout the first chapter, this quote stood out to me, "It has become clear to us that liminality is not only transition but also potentiality, not only "going to be" but also "what my be" a formulable domain in which all that is not manifest in the normal day-to-day operation of social structures." This just goes to show how many different ways in which liminality can go because it is so open ended.
