Lane's 4 Axioms

Sarah Robertson

Lanes four axioms discuss what is needed to consider sacred place sacred. The first axiom says that a sacred place can be tread upon without entering. This means that a place that is sacred to one person is not sacred to everyone; not everyone can experience the sacred quality of that place. The second axiom says that you don't choose it, but that it chooses you. This means that you can't just walk somewhere and say you want this place to be sacred; the place has to choose you. Lanes third axiom says that a sacred place is an ordinary place made extraordinary by ritual. This means that a place becomes sacred by the ritual acts performed there; rituals consecrate the place. Lanes fourth axioms says that a sacred place is centripetal and centrifugal; local and universal. This axiom has always confused me. I believe that it means that we are currently being driven towards centerd-ness even if we are not at our sacred place. I understand and agree with Lanes first three axioms but I have a hard time understanding how a place is centripetal and centrifugal.
