The Phenomenology of Prayer 2

Sarah Robertson

In Benson and Wirzba's book they discuss how it is important to de-center oneself when praying. If we do not de-center ourself then we are blind to what is actually going on. By de-centering ourselves we can focus on what is really important. Another thing Benson and Wirzba discuss is why silence is an important part of prayer. It is hard to listen to God when there is chatter around us. If there is not silence during prayer then it is hard to focus on prayer and fully listen to what God is saying. I think this is hard for people to achieve because we live in a world of background noises. Wherever you go there is always either music playing or, people talking, or a tv running in the background. We are scared to be in true silence because we are scared it will be "awkward" and "weird". If we are scared to be in complete silence when we are with our friends then how could we ever be in complete silence when trying to talk to God?
