The Phenomenology of Prayer discusses the difference between thanksgiving and praise. This comes in a good time because thanksgiving just passed. Thanksgiving is a time of being thankful and appreciate of everything that you have. Benson and Wirzba distinguish praise from thanksgiving as follows: "to give thanks is to praise God for the good things I have received from God, while to praise is to thank God for who God is." Most people do give thanks to God but it is not always for the correct things. They are thankful for the A on the test they got back and thankful for the new sweater they bought. What Benson and Wirzba are really saying is that we need to be thankful for having a roof over our head, waking up healthy every morning, and having a family that supports us. Another thing is, I don't think many people actually praise God. Yes, a few go to church but most people don't go around praising God and being thankful for who he is. We do not appreciate what God really does for us.
