Outside Reading III- Hiking for Howell
What I find most interesting about thru- hikers is their reason, their motive, to continue hiking. A mother and daughter pair from North Carolina wanted to hike the Camino again, but were looking for a good motive. They were looking at journal entries from hiker on the AT and one man decided to walk as a fundraiser for HIV/AIDS and Mental Health Care. This gave the mother/ daughter pair the inspiration to walk the Camino for RHA Howell, a non-profit organization that provides supports to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is an interesting idea because the hiker is no longer walking for themselves; they are walking for the benefit of many others. While this is a very charitable thing to hike for, it is questionable whether that would be enough mental motivation for some individuals who should be hiking solely for themselves.
