This last summer I worked at a
Christian camp in northern Virginia called camp Highroad. While at camp I was
walking through a narrow path surrounded by tall trees. I storm started coming
in but I figured I would be fine with the pace I was walking so I didn’t think
anything of it. Suddenly charcoal gray filled the sky and huge cracks a thunder
sounded off like an alarm. I started to get a little worried from the sight of
the sky and the sound of the thunder but it wasn’t until the wind started to
blow till I really freaked out. The wind started to crash into the pathway as
and it felt as if something huge was bellowing itself against my body. I had
never felt such a powerful presence of the wind pushing me out of the way. I
looked up and saw the trees around me bending as if they were precooked
noodles… to me they were huge pillars but to the wind they were almost nothing.
Towards the very end of the path I could barely embrace the wind as it bullied
against me and made it feel as if gravity was against me. It was in that moment
that I really felt as though there was some kind of numinous presence around me
and I will never forget the fear that unexpectedly struck me on what I thought
would be a simple hike.
