Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture #1 Communitas

The purest experience of Communitas that I have ever experienced was on the Appalachian Trail last may. I did experience it with my fellow classmates, but only to an extent. Because I had relationships with some of them before the trip, it was harder to break down the social structures that we brought on the rail with us from "the market place" But some of the most intense communitas that I experienced was with some of the Thu hikers that I met. I think this is because with the Thru hikers, we had no social structures to put on each other beyond age or gender because we had never met before. We were able to sit and have a meal together and meet each other for who the other really was rather than social constructs.
